Stephen Williams calls on David Cameron to Make Tax a G8 Priority

by Steve Beasant on 14 February, 2013

Yesterday at PMQs, Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West and Lib Dem Treasury spokesperson, called on David Cameron to make tax justice a priority for the UK’s Presidency of the G8, which meets in June in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland.

Stephen Williams asked the Prime Minister to make tax transparency and support for developing countries to collect tax they are owed at the forefront of his G8 agenda, to make sure that 2013 is the year of tax justice.

The PM agreed with Stephen Williams that tax should be the focus of the G8. This follows Stephen’s letter to him and the Chancellor calling for real action to tackle multinational companies’ tax dodging at the G8.

Commenting on his campaign, Stephen Williams said:

“2013 must be the year of tax justice. International action is needed to tackle a multinational problem and I will do everything I can to make sure that the UK’s Presidency of the G8 this year means real action to combat a problem that takes resources out of communities at home and abroad.

“I will hold David Cameron to his pledge to show strong political leadership on tax justice.”

Stephen Williams is taking the issue to the Liberal Democrat spring conference in March to toughen the party’s policy on corporate tax dodging, his motion can be found here.

Stephen Williams has also written extensively on tax justice on his blog. You can find out more about his thoughts here.
