Stephen Williams joins ‘Move Your Money’ campaign to promote ethical banking

by Steve Beasant on 31 May, 2012

Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol West Stephen Williams, has joined the Move Your Money campaign and opened a new ISA with Triodos, the Bristol based ethical bank.

Commenting on the Move, Stephen Williams said:

“Many people around the country, especially in Bristol, are concerned about the continued arrogance of bankers in awarding themselves bonuses which are unearned and unnecessary. I have made my feelings clear by moving my money to Triodos, the Bristol based ethical Bank. I encourage my constituents to look at the Move Your Money campaign and consider moving their money to an ethical and socially beneficial bank, such as Triodos. We cannot allow a return to ‘business as usual’; the big banks must listen and learn.”

Stephen Williams has also tabled a Parliamentary Early Day Motion (EDM) on binding shareholder votes on pay, which has received cross party support. The EDM states:

“That this House congratulates shareholders at Aviva, Barclays, Trinity Mirror and others for attempting to tackle high pay at their recent company annual general meetings; welcomes the beginning of the shareholder spring; believes that shareholders across Britain should join the campaign to tackle unjustifiable high pay; and calls on the Government to bring forward radical and effective proposals in its response to the Consultation on Enhanced Shareholder Voting Rights.”

Stephen Williams has written an article about moving his money, which you can read here.
