2018 World Cup: ‘not a political question so much as a moral one’ says Sir Menzies Campbell

by Steve Beasant on 28 July, 2014

Following Nick Clegg’s announcement that Russia should be strip of the 2018 World Cup, the Former Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Menzies Campbell told the BBC, yesterday that agreed with his party leader.

In his interview with the BBC, Sir Menzies Campbell said:

If we were making the decision today about the 2018 World Cup – we would most certainly be agreeing that it would not be in Russia, because of the behavior of Mr. Putin and Russia in the last few weeks.

This is not a political question so much as a moral one. Russia is a country that’s illegally annexed the sovereign terrority of another country, Ukraine.

And we should not in any way endorse that things can go on as usual.

If Russia were to change course in the immediate future things would be different, but at the moment Russia shows no signs of wanting to change; and indeed Mr. Putin’s determination in relation to the Ukraine and to other matters remains absolutely immovable.

The post Gorbachev settlement between Russia and the rest of the world as undoubtedly come to an end. Mr. Putin has been responsible for that – by his brand of nationalism.

It would be for the next government to decide whether they accepted the proposal made by Mr. Clegg today, but the sooner the decision was made the better it would be!
