Stephen Williams MP welcomes Deputy PM’s backing for his bank shares plan

by Steve Beasant on 23 June, 2011

MP for Bristol West and Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson, Stephen Williams, has welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister‘s public support for his plan to give away shares in the bailed-out banks, Lloyds and RBS.

Backing the plans, Nick Clegg said: “Psychologically it is immensely important that the British people feel they have not just been overlooked and ignored. Their money has been used to the tune of billions to keep the British banking system on a life-support machine and they have absolutely no say at all in what happens when normality is restored.”

Stephen Williams said: “I welcome renewed interest in my proposal to give the public shares in Lloyds and RBS; we need to keep the pressure up so that the Treasury will conduct its own study into this idea. I will be meeting with Treasury officials next week and hope to come out with a firm commitment to look into this popular and credible idea. We must give the public something back in return for bailing out the banks.”
