THE MOST HAUNTED SHOP IN THE UK?

by Steve Beasant on 4 July, 2009

As usual like many other Liberal Democrat Councillors, I’ve just had a normal week: three ward surgeries; I have dealt with a number of ward issues; attended East Marsh Involve our local group; and attended numerous council meetings and outside bodies – it’s all in an average working week.

Nonetheless, when you wake up in the morning you never know what’s in store; each problem you receive can be distinctly different, and every meeting at times can be a challenge but that’s life!

The great hope, is that you will always find an amusing story to tell; or that you will come away with some useful information that you to “shout, and tell the world”. On Wednesday, I found just the piece of information that I want to share with you – it is www.shrinkmap.info

For your information the website looks to be still under construction; however the map that I on Wednesday from my Ward Surgery at Your Place is something which is well worth mentioning. It is possibly one of the best maps of North East Lincolnshire I’ve ever seen and it really makes the area look interesting and first class; which it is (don’t believe all of the bad press). The colours are stunning and the team at Shrinkmaps have done a great piece of work; they include: Sean Atkinson, Matt Craven and Tim Knight – and the maps are printed on 100% recycled paper.

Well known location are also listed by well known names: Hardy Recreation Ground (The Ploggers); Grant Thorold (Granny) Park; Freeman Street (Freemo) Flats.

On the reverse of the Shrinkmap there is some great information, such as:

Whats in a name? Grimsby suffers from the misunderstanding about its name. Perhaps you’d change how you feel it if you knew that it is after the Town’s founder Grim or Gryme or Grimr. Grim was the first of 49 names of the great Norse god Odin in the text ‘Grimnismal’ and means ‘masked, hooded or helmeted one’. Some legends speak of a fisherman called Grim, other later texts tell of Norwegian pirate Gryme. Whatever the reason don’t think grim & grey; more grim and determined to bring home the catch, against all diversity.

Ross Tiger Trawler: one of the famous ‘Cats Boats’ sailing out of Grimsby in the late 1950’s, now a restored trawler as part of the Fishing Heritage centre. The tours are a fascinating insight into life at sea. Often staffed by ex trawler men for first hand accounts! Book via Museum.

The Most Haunted Shop in the UK? Beagle Lighting – 425 Cleethorpe Road the shop has been investigated by several paranormal organisations and even TV shows. Things get moved & lights unscrew themselves! Maybe the spooks are trying to get the energy and turn off the lights! www.lincsprt.com/investigations5.htm
